What is Studentweb? We as a group of student volunteers are committed to the existence and promotion of a World Wide Web Server devoted to Tulane Students. Following TCS Regulations and University Publishing guidelines, we seek the advancement of this service toward the greater good of the Tulane academic community. Basically, we want the student body of the university to have a dependable and useful server on which to post websites that they create.

Studentweb will only take a reactive role in dealing with any content issues. Tulane University's network is protected by all sorts of filtering and firewalls and such. If you don't know what that means, that's ok, the important thing is that if you're off campus, you won't be able to connect via FTP or Telnet. That's just the way it goes. Instead, you need to use encrypted protocols. The encrypted protocols equivalent to FTP and Telnet are called SFTP and SSH. More about them can be found on the support page. Where do I get help? There are a lot of resources for getting help with your web publishing adventures. The first place to check might be Studentweb support. It contains information specific to Studentweb. As time passes, more general information about the web and the internet will be added to it. And you should always feel free to email studentweb help with any questions you may have. We'll definately try to assist you. Why didn't I get a response to my email to studentweb help? All of the people maintaining studentweb and doing user support are students. Infact, at the moment, it's just one student. I get busy with school work sometimes. I get sick sometimes. I get lazy. Alot. The help account gets tons of spam mail just like any other mail account. Sometimes I get confused and delete the wrong messages. Whatever the case may be, I apologize. And I promise that I'm not blatantly ignoring you. I try to respond to all messages. If a few days have passed and you haven't gotten a response, email again. Don't bother getting upset though, cause it won't help. What is my disk quota? Each student gets a 5MB quota. Please respect the purpose of the server and do not put any non-WWW material in your directory. Will you raise my disk quota? Probably not. But we do realize that some of you may be required to use your studentweb space for class assignments, and that this may force you to eat up space rather quickly. Please feel free to ask, and we will consider it. No promises though. What applications may I run on Studentweb? You may only run World Wide Web related applications on StudentWeb. For the consideration of other users anybody found running any application not related to the WWW may have their account immediately suspended. Or if we're in a really bad mood, we'll replace your website with a picture of some random guy eating spaghetti through his nose. How do I access the cgi-bin? We would actually prefer that you not use cgi-bin, because there are more capable, more secure, and easier alternatives. Instead we would suggest that you use PHP. PHP should be capable of anything that you could need to accomplish through cgi-bin. We plan on creating some customizeable services for studentweb accounts in the near future, and any suggestions you may have will be considered. If you're in need of some sort of forms or whatever, and are unsure of how to implement it, feel free to email Studentweb help. We'll do our best to help you as soon as we can. If you have more questions concerning PHP, or really really REALLY want to use cgi-bin stuff, email help@studentweb.tulane.edu. We'll deal with it on a case by case basis.
