Hello, my name is Cherie LeBlanc and I'm a fat woman. I was a fat baby, a fat child, a fat adolescent, a fat young adult, a fat middle age person, and so on and so on. My point is that I have lots of experience with living as a fat person. I've had a taste of all our society dishes out to those who stray from its sacred parameters. I've been barked at by young males from the back of pickup trucks in grocery store parking lots, and called degrading names by people who screamed at me from passing cars as I waited for buses. Job discrimination is also part of this story. Obesity is not contagious. You cannot catch if from me or any other fat person. Why all the fat jokes? What's so funny about being fat? Why is obesity so repugnant to people? Negative experiences in my life probably have correlations in the lives of most people who in some way do not meet our society's prescribed norms. People, who are too tall, too thin, too short, are also subject to the daily thoughtless words, ridicule and discrimination of their family, coworkers and passing strangers. It is time to call attention to the damage done to our selves. A growing movement, which addresses these issues, is "Size Acceptance." Organizations such as the International Size Acceptance Association, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance and Body Positive are shaping a better image for all of us.
