What is preschool Literacy?

Literacy means character development when you are working with young children. It means having the ability to:

• communicate with others by interacting with peers and adults in various ways.
• recognize that symbols and sounds in their environment have meaning.
• listen or look for information or directions.

Children interact with the environment. As children interact with the environment they are placed in, they learn how to:

• take in knowledge
• build upon the knowledge they have already acquired
• and interact in social ways
