Short Answer Style Questions: These are the sorts of questions that might need 1-2 paragraphs to answer. The optional essay question could also be similar to these in style, but require a longer, more in-depth response

Explain briefly what radiocarbon dating is, how it works, why it is important to archaeology, and what are its limitations?

Describe what you know about the climate fluctuations of the Pleistocene. How do we know what we know about this subject?

Homo erectus did many things that previous hominids had not. Discuss at least three of these innovations or “firsts”.

Art seems to have been an important part of Paleolithic modern human culture. Discuss at least three different examples (types of art, sites). If you can, discuss some of the elements of the art (content, how it was manufactured or used, or other issues).

Discuss technology and material culture in Upper Paleolithic Eurasia. If you can, be specific about chronology.

Describe the evidence for early human colonization of Australia.

What is the difference between a clan and a lineage?

What are ascribed and achieved status? Can you discuss them in relationship to different kinds of human societies?

What kinds of changes occur in human behavior around the world at the Pleistocene/Holocene transition? Specifically mention the Natufian culture.
