What is silk

Silk are the fibres that silkworms produce to make their cocoons. Silkworms are not, as the name suggest, worms, but are infact silk-producing larvae or caterpillars that belong to several species of moths.

Other isects, such as spiders, also make cocoons out of silk, but the cocoon coverings of the mulberry silk moth, Bombyx mori, and other closely related moths are the only fibres used by the silk industry. Back to the top
